Can you breathe and see with the hood fully zipped?
Yes. The zip stops below the eyes, leaving your sight line open, and the fabric sits away from your mouth rather than pressed against it. Most people leave it fully zipped only for the coldest stretch of a walk.

Does the collar look strange when the hood is down?
No. The hood folds flat into the collar and reads as a normal stand-up neckline. Nobody can tell there's a balaclava in there until you pull it up.
